Tucked into the south-eastern corner of Pennsylvania, close to the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country, Lancaster is a small and colourful city that combines influences of the colonial with that of the Pennsylvania Dutch. One of the oldest of America’s inland towns, Lancaster boasts more than 200 unique shops and boutiques, a diverse array of excellent restaurants and a stunning countryside, all combined to make it a well-liked tourist destination for a holiday in Pennsylvania.
Also known as Amish Country, Lancaster County is a land of fertile farmland and rolling hills on which thousands of America’s Amish populations lead a “plain” lifestyle. Visitors can have a tour on the traditional horse and buggy and shop at farmers’ markets for handcrafted Amish quilts. Charming covered bridges are also plentiful, with Lancaster boasting the highest concentration in the state. These covered bridges dot the landscape alongside historical sites such as the Ephrata Cloister, a national landmark dating from 1732. Travellers seeking a more urban experience can explore the country seat of Lancaster with its art galleries, boutiques and restaurants. The museums and markets preserve the history of Lancaster, while the eastern side of town offers more commercial attractions such as fast-food eateries and miniature golf.
